About Los Fresnos CISD

The Los Fresnos Consolidated Independent School District is uniquely situated in the heart of Cameron County, Texas on Texas Highway 100. The City of Los Fresnos is about 20 minutes away from South Padre Island, 20 minutes to the border to Mexico, and about 15 minutes away from the City of Brownsville, which has a population of more than 180,000.

In 1915, the first one-room school house opened in the community of Los Fresnos. Other schools were scattered throughout Cameron County. Los Fresnos ISD was created by the Texas Leglslature in 1921.

Two more school districts were consolidated into the Los Fresnos ISD in the early 1970s – Olmito Independent School District in 1970 and Cameron County Common School District #10 (Las Yescas) in 1972. Upon their consolidation, the district's name changed to Los Fresnos Consolidated Independent School District.

School district offices are located in the City of Los Fresnos. The district serves the northern portion of the City of Brownsville, the towns of Bayview, Indian Lake and western portion of Rancho Viejo, and the unincorporated communities of Arroyo City, Arroyo Gardens-La Tina Ranch, Chula Vista-Orason, Del Mar Heights, Green Valley Farms, Las Yescas, Laureles, and Olmito.

The district encompasses 487 square miles and serves more than 10,700 students, with one high school that serves students in grades 11-12, one campus that serves students in grades 9-10, one alternative campus, three middle schools, and nine elementary campuses. There are many large residential subdivisions that have been identified within the district which will have a dramatic impact on the district’s student population. Los Fresnos CISD completed a new ninth grade campus and two elementary schools from 2009 to 2011, and the district is poised to accommodate this growth while monitoring and planning for additional growth in the years ahead.

Los Fresnos CISD is fully accredited by Texas Education Agency (TEA) and has received numerous regional, state and national honors for academic excellence and student achievement.

Los Fresnos CISD students, especially those who are economically disadvantaged, have consistently outperformed the state and regional averages. The Board of Trustees, administration and staff are committed to making Los Fresnos CISD one of the top districts in the state.
