LOS FRESNOS, Texas — Los Fresnos High School student Luis Aranda has been named a Semifinalist in the 2027 National Merit Scholarship Program, earning recognition in one of the nation’s most prestigious academic scholarship competitions.
More than 16,000 students nationwide were selected as Semifinalists in the 72nd annual program. Semifinalists represent less than one percent of U.S. high school seniors and include the highest-scoring entrants in each state. They will have the opportunity to continue in the competition for approximately 6,700 National Merit Scholarships worth nearly $24 million.
“We are incredibly proud of Luis and the dedication he has shown to his education,” said Los Fresnos High School Principal Justin Stumbaugh. “This national recognition is an outstanding accomplishment and a reflection of his hard work.”
As Luis moves forward in the competition, he will receive support from the Los Fresnos High School College Center, which assists students with college preparation, applications, scholarships and other opportunities related to postsecondary education.
To advance to Finalist standing, Semifinalists must complete a detailed scholarship application that includes their academic record, participation in school and community activities, leadership, employment, honors and awards. Students must also meet additional academic and program requirements.
“Luis has reached an exciting milestone, and now our focus is helping him navigate the next steps in the process,” said Higher Education Coordinator Laura Gomez-Trevino. “We are proud to support him as he continues preparing for college and future scholarship opportunities.”
More than 15,000 Semifinalists are expected to advance to Finalist standing, with Finalists notified in February. National Merit Scholarship winners will be announced beginning in April 2027.
