Sixty Los Fresnos High School seniors graduated with an Associate of Arts degree in General Studies from Texas Southmost College on Saturday, May 16, marking a major milestone for Los Fresnos CISD and its Dual Enrollment Program.
The students earned their degrees by completing 60 college credit hours while still in high school through the district’s Dual Enrollment Program. This no-cost opportunity allows eligible students to take college-level courses that satisfy both high school graduation requirements and college credit requirements, giving them a significant head start on their postsecondary journey.
“This outstanding group reflects the dedication of our students,” said Celina Grienier, Director for Advanced Academics. “Earning an associate degree while still in high school is a tremendous accomplishment, and these students are setting a strong example for future Falcons.”
Through Dual Enrollment, students build college readiness, gain experience with college-level coursework, and strengthen skills that support their future success. Credits earned may be applied toward an Associate Degree at Texas Southmost College or transferred to most public colleges and universities in Texas, helping students save time and money as they continue their education.
“We’re proud to help students get a head start on their postsecondary journey at no cost,” said Laura Gomez Trevino, Higher Education Coordinator. “The Dual Enrollment Program opens doors for students and helps them see what is possible beyond high school.”
Dual Enrollment opportunities are available to all eligible Los Fresnos United and Los Fresnos High School students who meet college placement eligibility criteria through the TSIA2 assessment. Students may begin coursework as early as freshman year, while others may choose to start later depending on their academic goals and readiness.
LFCISD Dual Enrollment courses include a combination of core course requirements and electives. The majority of courses are taught on campus by qualified Los Fresnos CISD instructors who also meet college-level teaching requirements, allowing students to complete coursework without traveling off campus.
Students interested in Dual Enrollment may contact their assigned counselor or a College and Career Center staff member for more information. The 60 seniors graduating with associate degrees represent the continued growth of advanced academic opportunities in Los Fresnos CISD and the district’s commitment to preparing students for college, career, and beyond.
