Garcia, De la Garza qualify for UIL Academics State Meet

Kiara Garcia and Karina de la Garza each qualified for the UIL Academics State Meet after the results of the Region Pod Meet Saturday became official.
 
Garcia, a senior, placed first in Literary Criticism competition individually to qualify for state. She was also part of a four-person Lit Crit team that included Paulina Lopez, Roberta Torres and Karla Zambrano. Coaching the team was teacher Catherine Canning.
 
De la Garza, a junior, competed in Feature Writing, Headline Writing and News Writing and placed second in the Headline Writing competition. Also competing in Journalism competition events were Iris Lugo in Copy Editing, Caitlin Cavazos in Headline Writing and Andres Garcia in News Writing. Teacher Rocio Leal coached the Journalism events.
 
Others competing in the regional meet were Reiana Apacible in Computer Applications, Nicholas Gutteridge in Ready Writing, Sydney Jo Peña, Allan Peralez, Luz Torres and Abril Esquivel in Spelling and Vocabulary, and Abigail Martinez in Persuasive Speaking.
 
The UIL Academics State Meet will be held in 26 pod meets throughout the state. LFHS will compete in the South Pod 1 meet Saturday at Sharyland High School.
