LFHS students qualify for UIL Academics regionals

Fifteen Los Fresnos High School students qualified for the UIL Academics Region IV pod meet scheduled Friday and Saturday at Harlingen South High School.

The students qualified by placing among the top three in their divisions at the District 32-6A UIL Academics Meet held in San Benito March 27. Two other students are alternates.

Because of COVID and social distancing restrictions, the UIL will not hold a single regional meet in one location. Instead, The UIL will hold pod meets at eight locations in the region. The East Valley location in Harlingen is one of the pods and will bring together qualifiers from District 32-6A and 32-5A.

The top finishers qualify for the UIL Academics State Meet in Austin April 29-May 1.

There are 10 categories of events. Karina De la Garza qualified for regionals in three events. As a team, the LFHS Literary Criticism and Spelling and Vocabulary Teams were district champions and qualify as teams for regionals.

Literary Criticism: 1st Place Team

Spelling and Vocabulary: 1st Place Team

  • Sydney Peña, 1st place
  • Allan Peralez, 2nd place
  • Luz Torres, 4th place
  • Abril Esquivel, 11th place

Feature Writing: Karina De La Garza, 2nd place

Copy Editing: Iris Lugo, 2nd place

Headline Writing: Karina De La Garza, 1st place; Caitlin Cavazos, 2nd place

News Writing: Karina De La Garza, 1st place;  Andres Garcia, 2nd place

Computer Applications: Reiana Apacible, 3rd place; Jonas Apacible, 4th place alternate

Prose Interpretation: Andrea Iturbe, 4th place, alternate

Ready Writing: Nicholas Gutteridge, 2nd place; Freshman level: Iliana Delarosa, 1st place

Persuasive Speaking: Abigail Martinez, 3rd place; Daviana Zamora, 4th place alternate
