Los Fresnos, TX – Los Fresnos CISD employees gathered to launch the new school year at Convocation, held for the first time at the district’s state-of-the-art Performing Arts Center. Staff were given an exclusive first look inside the state-of-the-art venue, which will soon serve as a hub for student talent in the visual and performing arts.
The theme for this year’s Convocation was “The Difference Starts with YOU,” a powerful message underscoring the impact every staff member has on the lives of students across the district. The day was divided into two sessions—one in the morning and another in the afternoon—to accommodate all campus and department personnel.
The event featured a series of vibrant student performances, including choir, one-act play, mariachi, folklórico, cheer, STARS, the Jazz Band, and a presentation of colors by the NJROTC. The entire performance was thoughtfully curated under the direction of Anibal Villarreal, Director of Fine Arts, along with his dedicated team—showcasing the incredible talent and passion of Los Fresnos students. These performances offered a powerful preview of the kind of artistic excellence the Performing Arts Center is designed to support.
Superintendent Dr. Gonzalo Salazar delivered a heartfelt message to staff, reminding them of the lasting impression their dedication can leave on students. “Today’s theme is more than just words—it’s a call to action. The difference starts with you. With every lesson you teach, every student you reach, every challenge you rise to meet—you shape the future,” said Salazar.
The convocation also highlighted the district’s ongoing commitment to leadership development. The Leadership Los Fresnos CISD initiative took center stage, emphasizing the Profile of a Leader—a guiding framework built around four key pillars: Serve Others, Foster Growth, Promote Innovation, and Leave a Legacy.
Dr. Salazar underscored the importance of this mission, saying, “This is a celebration of our growth, our direction, and our shared vision. In Los Fresnos CISD, we are not just responding to change, we are leading it. Through our Profile of a Leader initiative, we’ve identified the qualities our students need to thrive—and we’ve taken action at every level to bring those pillars to life.”
Members of the Executive Cabinet took turns showcasing how schools and departments have embodied each of the four pillars throughout the past year. A panel of leaders from campuses and departments also shared real-life stories and practical insights, illustrating how these leadership qualities are making a difference across the district.
The day also included two keynote addresses: Dr. Sam Nix spoke during the morning session, while Ms. Patricia Valenzuela addressed the afternoon audience. Both speakers inspired staff with personal stories and actionable advice, reinforcing the Convocation’s central message of influence, purpose, and connection.
In addition to celebrating the new school year, Dr. Salazar took time to express his appreciation for Noble Builders and the Facilities and Maintenance Departments, acknowledging their tireless efforts in bringing the Performing Arts Center to life.
This exceptional venue will officially open to the community during a formal ribbon-cutting ceremony on Saturday, September 13, where the public will be invited to explore the space and witness the district’s commitment to the arts firsthand.
