Los Fresnos CISD proudly announces Mr. José Serrato as the new principal of Los Cuates Middle School for the 2025-2026 school year. A dedicated member of the Los Fresnos CISD family since 2021, Mr. Serrato brings a strong background in education and leadership, shaped by more than a decade of service in public schools and the United States Army Reserve.
Mr. Serrato began his career in education in 2010, serving in a variety of roles including social studies teacher, school counselor, and assistant principal. Notably, he most recently served as the assistant principal at Los Cuates Middle School, giving him valuable insight into the school community he now leads. He holds a Bachelor of Arts in History from the University of Texas at Brownsville and Texas Southmost College, as well as a Master of Education in Counseling and Development from Lamar University.
Mr. Serrato participated in the inaugural cohort of the Los Fresnos CISD Aspiring Principal Fellowship, a program that is commitment to developing leaders from within District. During his time in the fellowship, he participated in targeted leadership training aligned with the district’s Profile of a Leader, which emphasizes visionary leadership, equity-driven decision-making, instructional excellence, and community engagement. The program provided mentorship from district leaders, real-world campus leadership experience, and the tools needed to lead a campus.
“Mr. Serrato’s time in the Aspiring Principal Fellowship has clearly prepared him for this next step,” said Kathleen Hollon, Executive Director for Talent Development and Support Services. “We are proud of our investment in growing internal leaders, and Mr. Serrato exemplifies what it means to be a product of that pipeline. His deep understanding of our district’s values and his dedication to student success make him an excellent fit to lead Los Cuates Middle School.”

“I am honored to lead Los Cuates Middle School and excited to serve the students, staff, and families of this incredible community,” said Mr. Serrato. “Our mission is clear—we will empower every student to thrive academically, socially, and emotionally. By cultivating a collaborative culture and holding ourselves to the highest standards, we will prepare students not only for success in the classroom, but for life beyond our walls.”
In addition to his role in education, Mr. Serrato remains an active member of the United States Army Reserve, where he serves as an Automated Logistical Specialist instructor in the 9/95th Battalion of the 94th Training Division.
