Los Fresnos CISD Teacher Earns National Board Certification

Ms. Lucila Lopez sets example for students and colleagues

Ms. Lucila Lopez, a veteran educator with 11 years of experience teaching 10th-grade English II ESL at Los Fresnos CISD, has earned National Board Certification, a prestigious credential recognizing excellence in teaching.

The National Board Certification process is a rigorous, multi-year process that requires educators to demonstrate expertise in content knowledge, effective teaching practices, and student learning. Teachers must submit evidence, including written analyses, video recordings, and student work samples, as well as engage in ongoing professional reflection.

For Lopez, the decision to pursue the certification came after completing her Master’s in Teacher Leadership with a specialization in ESL. Though balancing her responsibilities as a mother, teacher, and student was challenging, her desire to set a strong example for her children and students pushed her to persevere. “I couldn’t have done it without the support of my husband, Raul, and my mentor, Dr. Jennifer Morrison,” Lopez shared.

Dr. Morrison, a mentor from Region 6 ESC, guided Lopez through the two-year certification process, which included components like content knowledge assessments and classroom video reflections.

Lopez’s National Board Certification will benefit her students by enabling her to better address their diverse needs, particularly her Emergent Bilingual learners. “This achievement isn’t just about me; it’s a testament to the incredible teachers I work with every day,” Lopez said. “Together, we are committed to continuous improvement to help our students succeed.”

Lopez’s success underscores Los Fresnos CISD's dedication to fostering professional growth and excellence in education.
