Los Fresnos CISD Students Code Big Wins at 2024 District Robotics Competition

The Los Fresnos CISD hosted the 2024 District Robotics competition on Saturday, February 24, 2024 at the new Resaca Middle School gym.

A total of forty-two teams competed including 28 elementary,11 middle school, and 2 high school.

The annual competition, hosted by the Technology Department, was organized by District Robotics Coordinator Angela Dunkin.  It was divided into two challenges that tested student technical application and displayed STEM knowledge.

The elementary VEX Robotics Challenge, titled “City Technology Rebuild”, assigned tasks designed around resilience and reconstruction after natural disaster.  In the “Up and Over” challenge, secondary student teams battled it out with a clawbot to collect, pick up, and move cubes from one side of the field to another to create combinations and score points.  Both fields of students competed in matches that consisted of three periods in which they completed various tasks.  District staff and volunteers served as judges that assessed points and calculated scores.

“We are grateful to have this opportunity to showcase the many talents of Los Fresnos CISD Robotics Club students and recognize that none of this would be possible without the extraordinary support of our exceptional parents and staff,” said Angela Dunkin, Los Fresnos CISD Robotics Coordinator.

The use of computers and technology has become a staple of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) curriculum at all Los Fresnos CISD schools. All nine LFCISD elementaries have coding labs that are utilized beginning as early as Pre-Kindergarten.  Twelve of the district’s campuses also have a Robotics Club that incorporates hands-on activities that build problem-solving skills in a team-based environment.  It is open to students beginning in second grade and helps build on their STEM foundation through graduation.
