Perez to serve on the Texas School Safety Center Board

Noe E. Perez has taught in the classrooms of Los Fresnos CISD schools for 31 years.  The Los Fresnos High School educator has seen thousands of students walk through the halls, which he has been keen to keep safe over the years.

“I care about student, school, and community safety.  I want to be a part of the solution.  I want to listen and learn,” said Perez.

This past week Perez was appointed by Governor Greg Abbott to the 17 member Texas School Safety Center Board.  Perez applied for the position months ago and was formally interviewed in August before being notified of his appointment.  The board approves the budget for programs of the Texas School Safety Center and advises the Texas School Safety Center.

The Texas School Safety Center, based on the campus of Texas State University, works hand in hand with the Governor’s office to oversee various facets of safety and security for K-12 schools and junior colleges in Texas.  That includes research, training and technical assistance, information dissemination, prevention initiatives, and outreach programs.  The Board is responsible for submitting a biennial report to the Governor, legislature, the State Board of Education, and the Texas Education Agency regarding the Texas School Safety Center.

Perez will be the only teacher from the State of Texas to serve on the board.  Other members include a PTA member, school administrators, a Superintendent, DSHS, TEA, and an OAG representative, among others.  Perez says he is excited to start in his role, welcoming the support he has received so far.

“Public safety issues interest me.  I am grateful for my amazing and supportive wife and family.  I am also grateful for the great students, staff, and our supportive community,” said Perez.

Perez will report to his first meeting on February 27, 2023.
