New Community Partnership Paints Bright Outlook for LFCISD Students

A stroke of inspiration lead to the groundwork for a new program that will increase artistic and cultural exposure for Los Fresnos CISD students. The district will begin a semester-long partnership with the Brownsville Museum of Fine Arts in January that will give students a new opportunity to visit the museum, display their art, and perform.

“Students will gain additional knowledge of the diverse styles and value of art, while fostering and encouraging their desire to express themselves more creatively, said Luis Saldana, an Art History educator at Resaca Middle School.

Students in advanced art classes at secondary campuses and elementary after school programs will visit the museum during field trips at no cost them. It was made partially possible through a donation from longstanding district partner, the Rotary Club of Los Fresnos.

“Our organization was looking for a way to support the District and Rotary’s shared mission of cultural literacy. We believe an appreciation of the arts should fall under basic education because it opens up student perspectives and helps build well-rounded individuals,” said Martin Magallanes, current President for the Rotary Club of Los Fresnos.

Saldana says while students gain vast knowledge through daily classroom curriculum, the first-hand exposure to local culture and art they will receive cannot be replaced.

“Previously, we would have to travel further to see art exhibits, so it’s nice to have something closer to home. I’m thrilled our students will gain a new real-world experience to art,” said

Los Fresnos CISD students will be afforded the opportunity to participate in an Art and Music Expo in the month of April. LFCISD student art work will be on display in the museum from beginning April 8 through April 22. Four events featuring student music and dance performances will take place weekly.

“All 30 students in my class will have at least two pieces each in the show, including a photo recreation project and pop art,” said Saldana.

“We are very proud of our students and our district. We believe students need the opportunity to showcase their talents in the community and are happy to provide these growth opportunities,” said Magallanes.
