Los Fresnos, June 8--Los Fresnos CISD Athletic Director David Cantu announced four new head coaches have been selected for the 2022-2023 school year. The coaches will oversee the Los Fresnos High School Golf, Softball, Tennis, and Water Polo sport programs. Three of the coaches were promoted from their assistant status within their respective programs, while one begins his coaching tenure.
Agapito Ortega, Jr., Head Coach
Agapito Ortega, Jr. is teeing off the new school year as head coach of the Los Fresnos High School Golf program. The Los Fresnos native is no stranger to the local greens, where he played as a student athlete for Los Cuates Middle School and Los Fresnos High School before graduating from The University of Texas at Brownsville/Texas Southmost College, where he competed collegiately. Ortega immediately began his career with Los Fresnos CISD as a teacher after college, working his way through various campuses before being promoted to assistant golf coach, serving for five years.
Ortega was an integral part of the coaching team that worked with the highly successful Lady Falcons golf team that won district play for six years. In 2022, the Boys golf team had a superb year, earning various distinctions. Falcon pride runs deep in Ortega’s family. His wife teaches at Dora Romero Elementary school, and they have been blessed with two beautiful children, Gabriella Rose and Agapito, lll.
Matthew Molina, Head Coach
Matthew Molina is looking for a home run season that makes a positive impact not just on the diamond, but in the community as well. In his 13th year of coaching, Molina will set out as head coach of the Lady Falcons Softball team. This is the fifth year Molina is with the talented team after serving for three years as an assistant, and one as first assistant. He also currently coaches varsity football and serves as a Physical Education coach at LFHS.
Molina says he is looking to build on the past success and tradition of softball program, which is consistently among the best in the Rio Grande Valley. Molina is proud that the team were Area finalists in 2022, and Regional semifinalists in 2021. He is married to Blanca Ordaz-Molina, who is also a softball coach. Their children, Mia and Mateo, are proud students of Los Fresnos CISD.
Jesus Gutierrez, Head Coach
Jesus Gutierrez is serving up some knowledge about the hardcourt for new and returning players on the LFHS tennis team. He brings over 30 years of experience of playing the game and other racquet sports
as head coach. Gutierrez spent the last 7 years in the assistant spot for LFHS Falcon Tennis. He has helped oversee the varsity, junior varsity, and freshman boys and girls teams.
He has helped guide many players to playoff competition, including multiple bi-district championships and several regional qualifiers.
Coach Gutierrez is married to Wendy Gutierrez and they have two daughters.
Dr. Brent Burkott, Head Coach
Dr. Brent Burkott is diving into coaching this year, taking over the developing water polo program. Burkott, who has a Doctorate in Curriculum and Instruction, a Master’s in Mariculture, and a Bachelor’s in Biology, has taught in Los Fresnos since 2007. While Burkott is new to coaching, he is not new to working with teens as part of the Boy Scouts of America for 25 years and the Los Fresnos Nature Club. He will coach both boys and girls water polo teams, which is in its’ first year as an official UIL program. His goal is to develop strong student athletes in the pool and in the classroom.
Burkott comes to Los Fresnos by way of Hawaii where he worked as researcher. Other work experience includes serving as an agricultural extension agent in Texas, a shrimp-farm manager in Puerto Rico and Texas, and at one point owned a 50-acre tropical fish and shrimp farm in Kahuku, Hawaii for five years. He enjoys all water-based sports, but has spent a lot of time diving and surfing, including the big waves on the North Shore of Oahu in Hawaii.
