Los Fresnos Students, Educators Profiled In Project Lead the Way STEM Research Piece

The Los Fresnos Consolidated Independent School District is proud to announce the selection of the district as the focus of a new research perspective piece in S.T.E.M. education. Project Lead the Way, a leader in Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (S.T.E.M.) curriculum, conducted the demographic study on Los Fresnos C.I.S.D. campuses in the Fall of 2021 to gauge student progression at all levels. The result is a Student Impact Profile titled “Expanding Possibilities: Student Voice Driving STEM Growth” that was unveiled on Tuesday, May 17th during a joint press conference between Los Fresnos CI.S.D. and PLTW leaders.

PLTW in Los Fresnos C.I.S.D. Classrooms

In 2016, Los Fresnos C.I.S.D. set out to strengthen the district’s stake in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (S.T.E.M.). After consideration, District administrators moved forward with implementing Project Lead the Way general and elective curriculum. Los Fresnos schools account for 14 of just over 12,000 in the U.S. that offer PLTW programs, which develop “in-demand, transportable knowledge and skills through pathways in computer science, engineering, and biomedical science”.

The district has seen immense success after creating a Project Lead the Way pipeline program that extends through all grade levels. The evolution and expansion of the program in schools has been supported by the addition of new modules, classes, and units. It is supported by instructors, who are certified to teach PLTW, and campus support staff, who have seen the positive response from students.

“We are fortunate to be able to provide our students with an engaging curriculum coupled with excellent teachers and campus leadership that supports the development of STEM concepts like design thinking, problem-solving skills, communication, and collaboration,” said Valarie Londrie, Executive Director for Academics at Los Fresnos.
