New Dual Language Program Aims to Build Diverse Foundation for Lifelong Learners

Los Fresnos--Thursday, March 17, 2022—A new program aims to build a diverse foundation for students is coming to Los Fresnos Consolidated Independent School District for the 2022-2023 school year.  Parents will have the opportunity to enroll their Pre-Kinder and Kinder aged children in Dual Language classes.  The program will provide curriculum to students in both English and Spanish with the goal of enhancing language, literacy, and academic achievement.

Bilingual, Biliterate, Bicultural

The Dual Language program will take a multi-faceted approach to learning that will create “bilingual, biliterate, and bicultural” individuals.  Right now, 20% of students in the LFCISD and 38% of Region One students are identified as Emergent Bilingual.  With English and Spanish both identified as primary languages in many homes in the district, a unique opportunity is available to continue to build on strong cross-cultural connections already in development.  Research shows that students who participate in dual language programs form strong linguistic foundations that translate to enhance cognitive and creative thinking.   Additionally, confidence, self-esteem, and familial connections are strengthened.

In the Classroom

In the classroom, Dual Language curriculum will mirror general education classrooms, but will be taught proportionately in English and Spanish.  Students will be encouraged to work together in order to improve communication and promote project-based instruction. Bridging periods will blend the two languages. In addition, classrooms and learning centers will be outfitted with key content and information like words and labels illustrated in both languages. Educators who participate must be bilingual certified and will continue to receive support and educational enrichment opportunities to ensure optimal instruction.

“We know that early introduction to biliteracy is a key component to stronger academic and sociological growth.  We are pleased to offer this opportunity to our youngest learners who can continue to build their skills as they advance in the classroom,” said Ada Amaro-Sibaja, Executive Director of Support Services.
