Hernandez Takes State in SkillsUSA

Screen Printing Technology Event

A Los Fresnos High School student is heading to the SkillsUSA National Competition in the Screen Printing Technology category as part of the Graphic Design Club.

Senior Dominique Hernandez won the SkillsUSA State Competition held in Corpus Christi in early April. His sister, Gia Hernandez a Los Fresnos United Freshman came in third. The Screen Printing Technology competition is a comprehensive test of competitors’ skills, including a written exam that assesses general knowledge, graphic design and screen printing, a resume submission. The duo competed against many state qualifiers from across Texas to finish in the first and third spots. Dominique will advance to the national competition will be held in Atlanta, Georgia in mid-June. “The competition felt natural because we do it in class almost every day. This competition proves to me that the skills we learn in class are skills I can use to start a business or work for a real shop immediately,” said Dominique Hernandez when asked about his win. Hernandez will pursue a Finance degree at UTRGV this fall and hopes to apply what he learned to building a brand and garment print shop.

Right now, Dominique and Gia are part of eleven students in the quickly growing Graphic Design Club and class. Coach Ivan Hernandez says the group enjoys “print parties” which have continued to attract not just current LFHS students, but elementary groups who visit the campus.
