Mia Perez of Resaca Middle School outlasted a field of 35 spellers to win the Los Fresnos CISD Spelling Bee Saturday at Los Fresnos United Cafeteria.
Perez now qualifies to participate in the Rio Grande Valley Regional Spelling Bee scheduled March 5.
Perez and Noah Gomez, 4th grader at Lopez-Riggins Elementary, went several rounds before a Champion was crowned. “We are so proud of all our spellers! They put in a tremendous amount of time studying and learning various spelling patterns and rules.” said Valarie Londrie, Executive Director for Academics. “This year it came down to the final two spellers and they battled it out for several rounds before we could declare a winner.”
Catherine Canning, English Language Arts teacher at Los Fresnos High School, was the pronouncer.
Serving as judges were Sandra Ruiz, Director of Advanced Academics for Los Fresnos CISD; Victoria Portier, Coordinator of Library Media Services for Los Fresnos CISD, and Freddy Vela, Chief Meteorologist for KVEO.
The participants included:
- Las Yescas Elementary: Adam Ulloa, Kaylee Morua, Luis Vivar. Alternate: Josue Nieto. Coach: Amalia Salazar.
- Laureles Elementary: Angelica Ayala, Andrea Mariscal, Hasani Trejo. Alternate: Joanelle Monsivaiz. Coach: Flor Rodriguez-Trejo.
- Lopez-Riggins Elementary: Noah Gomez, Amariani Robledo. Coach: Rebecca Villarreal.
- Los Fresnos Elementary: Cason Crouch, Francisco Gaspar, Isabella Aguilar. Alternate: Lexi Aguilar. Coach: Katia Estrada.
- Olmito Elementary: Edayza Iglesias, Sebastian Montes, Ezekiel Blanco. Alternate: Luna Leal. Coach: Shirley Mariscal.
- Palmer-Laakso Elementary: Scarlett Galloway, Amelia Alvarez, Unique Strawther. Coach: Monica Guzman.
- Rancho Verde Elementary: Aiden Kupkowski, Justin Christopher, Dannalee Reyes. Alternate: Anirudh Roy. Coach: Norma Zapata.
