Food Allergy Information

A food allergy is an abnormal response to a food triggered by the body’s immune system. Symptoms of a food induced allergic reaction may be mild to severe, even live threatening resulting in anaphylaxis.   For this reason, Los Fresnos CISD has developed a Food Allergy Management Plan to promote the safety of students with diagnosed food allergies.  Guidelines to follow for any student displaying new allergy symptoms are also included in the Food Allergy Management Plan.

Key elements identified as being fundamental in the Food Allergy Management Plan for Los Fresnos CISD include the following:

  1. Importance of parents to identify students with food allergies who may be at risk for anaphylaxis with the completion of the Food Allergy form from the School Nurse Office.
  2. Forming a team comprised of the school nurse, school personnel, parents and health care providers to monitor food allergy action plans, emergency care plans, individualized health care plans and/or 504 plans.
  3. Provide training to school personnel to recognize signs and symptoms of a food allergy and appropriate emergency response.
  4. Post anaphylaxis reaction and review of policy and procedure.
