This is the second time that Texas rates school districts with a letter grade rating system. The A-F ratings are based largely on the results of the 2019 State of Texas Assessments of Academic Readiness (STAAR) and the End-of-Course (EOC) exams.

The accountability system in 2017 and prior years gave school districts in Texas one of two ratings: “Met Standard” or “Improvement Required.” The new rating is based upon a three-domain system that encompasses student achievement, school progress, and closing the achievement gaps.

Los Fresnos CISD scored a 90 on student achievement, 93 on school progress, and 96 on closing the achievement gaps for a grade of 94.

“We are pleased to see students performing at the highest level," Superintendent Gonzalo Salazar said. "An “A” rating is just one more measure of how our staff is making a difference in the lives of students. Although we are not defined by a single measure, the release of this rating is one more reminder of the important role of teachers in the lives of students. We are aware that the work we do impacts lives and this is a responsibility we do not take lightly."

Los Fresnos CISD is the only public school district in Cameron County to have earned the "A" rating two straight years.

Eight schools received letter grades of "A" by the TEA. They included Los Fresnos High School/Los Fresnos United, Los Cuates Middle School, Dora Romero Elementary, Laureles Elementary, Lopez-Riggins Elementary, Olmito Elementary, Rancho Verde Elementary and Villareal Elementary. No school made lower than a "B" grade.

“Our students are amazing! Teachers create opportunities to experience success and students rise to the occasion," Salazar said. "It is their enthusiastic participation in the academic experience that leads to a Post-secondary Readiness Distinction.”
