TWC Commissioner Julian Alvarez, a native of Harlingen, signed the check in a presentation whose audience included several dozen students. State Sen. Eddie Lucio Jr. and State Rep. Alex Dominguez also attended.

"Of the 13 grants that were awarded in Texas in this round, five went to school districts in Region One," Alvarez said. "It's because of the greatest leadership in Austin that we are getting support. The stars have lined up for Texas, and especially South Texas."

Alvarez compared the students in South Texas to some of the sharpest students in big cities.

"Some of the brightest minds in Texas come from South Texas," Alvarez said. "I've gone to competitions in College Station and Houston, and some of the top students come from the Rio Grande Valley."

The Jobs and Education for Texans grant allocates $10 million each biennium to defray start-up costs associated with the development of career and technical education programs to public community and technical colleges, and independent school districts. Equipment funded through JET grants must be used to train for jobs in high-demand occupations.
