Schools plan Veterans Day ceremonies Nov. 9-13

Los Fresnos CISD schools will hold ceremonies to honor those who were members of the U.S. armed forces during Veterans Day activities which will be held Thursday, Friday and Monday, Nov. 9, 10 and 13.

At some schools, students have invited their parents, grandparents or relatives who served in the military to be honored in their school ceremonies.

The Los Fresnos High School NJROTC Color Guard will be part of ceremonies at middle schools Liberty Memorial, Los Cuates and Resaca.

Here are the activities planned for each school:
  • Las Yescas Elementary, Friday, Nov. 10, 8:05 a.m.: Flag raising ceremony, invited veterans to speak
  • Laureles Elementary, Thursday, Nov. 9, 1:30 p.m.:PK-1 students will showcase shoebox project, assembly with invited veterans
  • Lopez-Riggins Elementary, Friday, Nov. 10, 1 p.m.
  • Los Fresnos Elementary, Friday, Nov. 10, 8:05 a.m.: Gymnasium.
  • Olmito Elementary, Friday, Nov 10, 9 a.m.: Cafeteria
  • Palmer-Laakso Elementary, Friday, Nov. 10, 8:30 a.m.: Informal presentation to students explaining the meaning of Veterans Day and why it is celebrated. Students will represent each branch of military.
  • Rancho Verde Elementary, Friday, Nov. 10, 9:15 a.m., Cafeteria: Guest speaker, Carlos Cascos, former Texas Secretary of State and former Cameron County judge. Student music performances.
  • Dora Romero Elementary, Monday, Nov. 13, 9 a.m.: Shoebox parade and songs for veterans.
  • Villareal Elementary, Friday, Nov. 10, 1 p.m., Gymnasium: Veteran guest speaker, patriotic songs by choir.
  • Liberty Memorial Middle School, Friday, Nov. 10, 2:50 p.m.: Celebration. Student Council, Cheerleaders, Staff who served in military as speakers, band.
  • Los Cuates Middle School, Friday, Nov. 10, 1:30 p.m.: Student speakers, various descriptions on the significant of Veterans Day.
  • Resaca Middle School, Friday, Nov. 10, 9 a.m.: Choir, Band, student speakers, Guest speaker Dr. Bradley Nordyke. "Armed Forces Medley" played by Band.
One of the more significant activities will be presented by the Student Council at Los Fresnos United, which will present the White Table, from a book by the same name written by Margot Theis Raven.

The White Table is set in many military mess halls as a symbol for and in remembrance to service members fallen, missing, or held captive in the line of duty. It is a table where no one will ever sit.

LFU Student Council members will make their presentations to five elementary schools throughout the day Friday. Their schedule: 
  • Lopez-Riggins Elementary, 8:15-10:30 a.m.
  • Los Fresnos Elementary: 9 a.m.-2:45 p.m.
  • Olmito Elementary: 12:05-2:30 p.m.
  • Palmer-Laakso Elementary: 1-2:45 p.m.
  • Las Yescas Elementary: 1:30-2:45 p.m.
