This is the image for the news article titled LFHS competes at UIL Mariachi FestivalThe Los Fresnos High School Mariachi Nuevo Halcón will compete in the 2019 UIL State Mariachi Festival at the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley in Edinburg Performing Arts Complex Friday and Saturday.

On Feb. 9, LFHS placed fourth place in the Class 6A division at the Texas Association of Mariachi Educators (TAME) competition. LFHS won the 2018 state championship.

The State Mariachi Festival is not for placements or ranking. It is an opportunity for them to recognize outstanding individual and section performances from groups around the State. 

Performances will be open to the public. Admission for each session will be $15 for adults and $10 for students, and only cash will be accepted. Children 6th grade and under are admitted free. Tickets will be sold at the door. No advance purchase is available. Spectators must have a paid admission for each session.

Seventy schools will be performing – 30 in Session I, 21 in Session II and 19 in Session III.

The schedule is as follows:
  • Session I: Friday, Feb. 22. The first of 25 performances begins at 2 p.m., and the last one begins at 9:45 p.m.
  • Session II: Saturday, Feb. 24. The first of 29 performance begins at 8 a.m., and the last one begins at 3:45 p.m.
  • Session III: Saturday, Feb. 24. The first of 17 performances begins at 5:15 p.m., and the last one begins at 9:30 p.m.
Los Fresnos will perform at 8:15 p.m. Friday

Performance time is limited to 10 minutes, not counting setting up and sound check.

Each ensemble will also receive a 30-minute clinic with a nationally recognized mariachi educator/performer at the conclusion of their performance.

High schools qualifying for state are limited to enter one mariachi group – traditional or experimental – in the State Mariachi Festival, provided that the group earned a Division I rating at the current year’s region medium ensemble contest.

At the Regional TAME competition Mariachi Halconcitos (Beginners), Mariachi Halcón Dorado (JV), and Mariachi Nuevo Halcón (Varsity) received the highest ratings.
