CATCH is an acronym for Coordinated Approach to Child Health, and the program has been implemented in Los Fresnos CISD schools. The program is designed to prevent childhood obesity and launch children and communities toward healthier lifestyles.

As the school nears its final full month, schools are planning CATCH activities for students and – in some cases – their families.

Area businesses are assisting in the success of the events as sponsors.

Olmito Elementary – Monday, May 18
CATCH Us Moving will be held from 4:30 to 6 p.m. at Olmito Elementary front lawn.

Students, parents, faculty and staff will be walking together and then enjoying different activities around the school grounds. The activity stations include volleyball, tetherball, croquet, tossing games, horseshoes, soccer and obstacle courses.

Students, parents and the community is invited to attend.

Past Events
Lopez-Riggins Elementary – Friday, April 24
A CATCH Health Fair will be held from 5 to 6 p.m.

The fair will feature health screenings, fitness passes, food samples, coupons and prizes that will be raffled throughout the evening.

Las Yescas Elementary – Thursday, April 30
CATCH Family Fun Night will be held at 6:30 p.m. at the school cafeteria.

There will be games and prizes for the entire family. There will also be a raffle for prizes and a nurse information station.

The LYE Cafeteria Manager will also be offering a "Make and Take: to learn how to make fun and healthy snacks.

Rancho Verde Elementary – Saturday, May 2
A CATCH Health Fair will be held from 9 to 11 a.m. at the RVE Cafeteria. The Health Fair is free to all students and their families.

There will be free health screenings, nutrition information and health food facts, fitness information, and door prizes. A Registered Dietician will also provide nutrition information.

Laureles Elementary, Los Fresnos Elementary and Liberty Memorial Middle School – Saturday, May 9
The first CATCH Me If You Can Run/Walk will be held at Leo Aguilar Memorial Stadium from 8 a.m. to noon.

There will be numerous activities for students and their families, including Zumba, obstacle course, Ga Ga ball, Form running, stretches/agility, blood pressure screenings, health presentations, cheer team performances, music, raffles and refreshments. Medals of participation will be given to all students.

Los Cuates and Resaca Middle Schools – Saturday, May 9
The Claws and Paws CATCH Bike Ride will be held from 8-11 a.m. Saturday, May 9.

The ride will begin at the Resaca Middle School front parking lot, go north on FM 1575, turn east on Henderson Road, turn south on FM 1847, turn west on Whipple Road, turn south on FM 1575, and end at the same parking lot.

There will be water stations. Healthy snacks will be provided by sponsors at the start/finish line.

More information is available at the two neighboring schools. A signed waiver form is required for each rider. Parents, students and the community is invited.

Palmer-Laakso Elementary – Friday, May 15
CATCH Me Being Active on Dia Del Niño, a collaboration with the PTA at PLE, is scheduled from 3:15 to 4:30 p.m., weather permitting.

There will be six bouncers, and various games for students to enjoy. Door prizes for students include basketballs, soccer balls, and more items. Water and fruit which has been donated will be served.

The event was scheduled Tuesday, May 12, but was postponed until Friday because of rain.
