LFHS UIL Literary Criticism Team Qualifies for State

The "Lit Critters" won the UIL regional championship at The University of Texas at San Antonio May 2-3, and now sets its sights on a state title at the UIL Academics State Meet May 19-21 in Austin.

The team of (pictured, left to right) Whitney Ortiz, Morgan Clark, Victoria Cavazos and Brianna Garcia outdistanced the second place team by 21 points to win regionals for the second straight year. Cavazos and Garcia were members of the 2013 regional champions that advanced to state.

Garcia also won the individual regional competition by six points, while Cavazos also qualified for state by taking first place in Headline Writing.

Individually in the Lit Crit event, Cavazos finished in fifth place, while Clark and Ortiz tied for ninth place.

Other LFHS team results were: Journalism 4th place, Spelling 6th place, Current Events 6th place, and Calculator Applications 7th place.

"We are so proud of our UIL Academics Team students and I am extremely grateful to our coaches for their commitment and dedication towards our UIL Academics Team goals," said Jan Lester, UIL Coordinator for Los Fresnos CISD. "Our Literary Criticism and Headline Writing students are very focused and aiming to make their names known at state."

LFHS placed 11th out of 41 teams that competed in regionals. Among the 17 Valley schools, LFHS ranked fifth.

The added highlight to the meet for LFHS students was that some caught a glimpse of First Lady Michelle Obama, who was on campus to talk to students about college choices. Other students got to see her motorcade.
