Company Commander Bonney Accepted into Naval Academy

Bonney was surprised to receive a “big fat envelope” at her home from the Department of the Navy during Spring Break.

In the envelope was a blue Naval Academy folder and inside it a certificate that read: “The Dean of Admission of the United States Naval Academy takes great pleasure in recognizing with this Certificate of Accomplishment the selection of Lydia Bonney to attend the United States Naval Academy Preparatory School with the Class of 2015.”

Senior Naval Science Instructor Major Luis Gomez said that Bonney has a bright future ahead at the Naval Academy.

"She is very mature above her years," Maj. Gomez said. "I have no problem that you are going to be an outstanding officer when you come out of the Naval Academy, either an Ensign or a a Second Lieutenant. Those young sailors and Marines under your charge are going to be grateful that they are going to have a great leader in front of them."

Bonney received a congressional nomination from Congressman Filemon Vela to attend the U.S. Naval Academy, West Point, and the Air Force Academy. She also applied for a JROTC scholarship to Naval ROTC programs at universities throughout the country.

The mission of the Naval Academy Preparatory School, located in Newport, R.I., is to enhance midshipman candidates’ moral, mental and physical foundations to prepare them for success at the U.S. Naval Academy. The 10-month course emphasizes preparation in English composition, mathematics, chemistry, physics and information technology.

Bonney signed her acceptance letter at the NJROTC unit at Los Fresnos High School with her mother, Debbie Bonney, Principal Ronnie Rodriguez, Gomez, and Naval Science Instructor Chief Carlos Marquez.
