This is the image for the news article titled Summer preparation safety and security measuresThe 2018 Los Fresnos High School Commencement Ceremony marked the end of another successful school year and the beginning of a period of preparation for the fall of 2018.

During this preparation period, Los Fresnos CISD officials have continued to build on district initiatives designed to maintain safe and orderly learning environments. Campus and district administrators have reviewed emergency management procedures and captured revisions in documents that ensure the consistent implementation of these measures and that these continue to be communicated effectively and efficiently.

Campus Police Training
Police and security personnel with the Los Fresnos CISD Police Department recently attended active shooter and intruder on-campus training sessions with Border Patrol and other law enforcement agencies. The Los Fresnos CISD Chief of Police has been conducting training and scenario planning with his staff while campuses are unoccupied. This type of training will continue throughout the summer months and through the course of the upcoming school year.

An extensive examination of each campus has been conducted with the intent of identifying new ways to increase security measures and improve the delivery of services. The participation of campus principals in the process has been instrumental as emergency management teams conduct threat assessment reviews. By working alongside members of the police department and other emergency management team members, principals have provided insight and gained valuable feedback that goes a long way in designing initiatives that lead to safe and orderly environments.

Services for Student Development
The Los Fresnos CISD recognizes that providing a quality educational experience requires educating the whole child. To this end, health services staff, counselors, and administrators continue to meet for the purpose of expanding services that address the socio-emotional aspect of student development. An Outreach Program that provides counseling sessions by third party service providers with specialized training has been in place for a number of years. District administrators are working with these outside organizations to plan professional development sessions that will help teachers and staff members proactively identify students in need of services.

Role of Parents
Parents play an important role in helping ensure the effectiveness of school security measures and the Parental Engagement and Empowerment Department has also been meeting to develop a plan that communicates the efforts of the school district and how parents can assist. One of the most important measures that parents can take is securing weapons kept in their households and making sure that these are kept out of the reach of students. Checking backpacks for toy guns, BB guns and pocket knives will help ensure these items don’t end up at school. School officials urge parents to take time to engage their children in conversations about the consequences that will result from students making threatening statements and the importance of not making these statements, even as a joke.

It is also important to help students understand the effects of advancing misinformation through social media and how this slows down the district’s ability to accurately assess the situation. District officials want children to reach out to parents, teachers, counselors, and administrators with concerns or to alert them of the things that threaten the safety and well-being of students. Students who prefer to remain anonymous have an opportunity to deliver a message using a link on the Los Fresnos CISD website and this will be reviewed with them at the beginning of the year.

Student Safety
The safety of our students and staff will continue to be the top priority for the Los Fresnos CISD. We recognize that every member of the community can contribute in productive ways to ensure that our students are safe.. We look forward to working with you in the upcoming school year as we work to deliver on our mission.
